Former WTO Secretary General Pascal Lamy delivers keynote speech.
Berlin, 7 June 2019 – The Hertie School today pays tribute to 210 master's degree graduates and 10 doctoral students at its annual graduation ceremony at the Konzerthaus Berlin, with around 1000 guests in attendance. Pascal Lamy, President of the Paris Peace Forum and former WTO Secretary General, will hold the commencement speech, and Hertie School President Henrik Enderlein will present the graduates with their diplomas.
As experts in public problem-solving, Hertie School graduates pursue careers in government, administration and international organisations, as well as in companies, foundations and non-governmental organisations. In the course of their studies, they deal, among other things, with governance and political decision-making in globally interconnected, multi-level systems. In a playful scientific analogy, Pascal Lamy offers his personal take on governance to the Class of 2019: “Governance is like matter, it has four states: national, which is solid; European, which is liquid; global, which is gaseous; and Trump, which is plasma (meaning nobody understands).”
The Class of 2019 is comprised of 132 Master of Public Policy (MPP) graduates and 78 Master of International Affairs (MIA) graduates. Around a third spent part of their two-year studies at one of the Hertie School’s 30 partner universities, while 32 completed dual degrees, for example at Columbia University in New York, the London School of Economics, or Sciences Po in Paris. The graduates come from 38 countries around the globe.
